Hi, I’m Marlena Budic, Business Manager at Abundance Global and leadership expert. Having held several senior roles throughout my career, I know what it takes to be a great leader. One skill that is often underrated, but I value very highly, is listening.
In my 21 years working in leadership roles, I’ve found that listening is the key to building strong and respectful relationships. It’s helped me to understand what makes a person behave a certain way, what their beliefs are and what they value the most.
With this knowledge, I’m able to make crucial decisions calmly and decisively.
For me, being a leader also means having a clear understanding of each person’s job. Sometimes you need to step into another person’s role for a day to see first-hand whether improvements are needed.
In any leadership role, you’ll face challenges. While each challenge is unique, I follow a similar path to find a solution:
- Ask questions. Lots of questions
- Listen carefully to the answers
- Get to the heart of the issue
- Find out who the issue is affecting
- Propose solutions
It’s important not to be overwhelmed by any challenges and to know that there is always a practical solution.
Finally, one of the most crucial parts of leadership is training. Empowering your team to make decisions and offer solutions is vitally important and beneficial to any business.
The people who experience the problems within a business should be able to voice their opinions and ideas. A true leader not only gives them the power to speak up, but they also listen.
